1 Poursuivez la charité, et désirez les dons spirituels, mais plutôt que vous puissiez prophétiser.

 1 Follow after charity, and desire spiritual gifts, but rather that ye may prophesy.

2 Car celui qui parle en une langue inconnue ne parle pas aux hommes, mais à Dieu: car aucun homme ne le comprend; quoi qu’il soit dans l’esprit il dit des mystères.

 2 For he that speaketh in an unknown tongue speaketh not unto men, but unto God: for no man understandeth him; howbeit in the spirit he speaketh mysteries.

3 Mais celui qui prophétise parle aux hommes pour l’édification, et l’exhortation et le réconfort.

 3 But he that prophesieth speaketh unto men to edification, and exhortation, and comfort.

4 Celui qui parle en une langue inconnue s’édifie lui-même; mais celui qui prophétise édifie l’église.

 4 He that speaketh in an unknown tongue edifieth himself; but he that prophesieth edifieth the church.

5 Je voudrais que vous parliez tous des langues, mais plutôt que vous prophétisiez: car plus grand est celui qui prophétise que celui qui parle des langues, à moins qu’il n’interprète, afin que l’église puisse recevoir de l’édification.

 5 I would that ye all spake with tongues, but rather that ye prophesied: for greater is he that prophesieth than he that speaketh with tongues, except he interpret, that the church may receive edifying.

6 Maintenant, frères, si je viens vers vous en parlant des langues, en quoi vous profiterai-je, à moins que je ne vous parle par révélation, ou par connaissance, ou par prophétie, ou par doctrine?

 6 Now, brethren, if I come unto you speaking with tongues, what shall I profit you, except I shall speak to you either by revelation, or by knowledge, or by prophesying, or by doctrine?

7 Et même les choses sans vie qui donnent un son, soit une flûte, soit une harpe, si elles ne donnent quelque distinction dans les sons, comment saura-t-on qu’il est joué de la flûte, ou de la harpe?

 7 And even things without life giving sound, whether pipe or harp, except they give a distinction in the sounds, how shall it be known what is piped or harped?

8 Car si la trompette donne un son incertain, qui se préparera pour la bataille?

 8 For if the trumpet give an uncertain sound, who shall prepare himself to the battle?

9 Ainsi vous de même, à moins que vous ne prononciez avec la langue des mots faciles à comprendre, comment saura-t-on ce qui est dit? car vous parleriez en l’air.

 9 So likewise ye, except ye utter by the tongue words easy to be understood, how shall it be known what is spoken? for ye shall speak into the air.

10 Il y a, il se peut, tellement de sortes de voix dans le monde, et aucune d’entre elles n’est sans signification.

 10 There are, it may be, so many kinds of voices in the world, and none of them is without signification.

11 Par conséquent si je ne connais pas l’intention de la voix, je serai envers celui qui parle un barbare, et celui qui parle me sera un barbare.

 11 Therefore if I know not the meaning of the voice, I shall be unto him that speaketh a barbarian, and he that speaketh shall be a barbarian unto me.

12 Oui certainement vous, puisque vous êtes zélés pour des dons spirituels, cherchez afin que vous puissiez exceller à l’édification de l’église.

 12 Even so ye, forasmuch as ye are zealous of spiritual gifts, seek that ye may excel to the edifying of the church.

13 C’est pourquoi, que celui qui parle une langue inconnue prie afin qu’il puisse interpréter.

 13 Wherefore let him that speaketh in an unknown tongue pray that he may interpret.

14 Car si je prie dans une langue inconnue, mon esprit prie, mais ma compréhension est infructueuse.

 14 For if I pray in an unknown tongue, my spirit prayeth, but my understanding is unfruitful.

15 Qu’est-ce donc? Je prierai avec l’esprit, et je prierai aussi avec la compréhension: je chanterai avec l’esprit, et je chanterai avec la compréhension.

 15 What is it then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will pray with the understanding also: I will sing with the spirit, and I will sing with the understanding also.

16 Autrement lorsque tu bénis avec l’esprit, comment celui qui occupe la place d’un homme sans instruction dira-t-il Amen à ton acte de remerciement, puisqu’il ne comprend pas ce que tu dis?

 16 Else when thou shalt bless with the spirit, how shall he that occupieth the room of the unlearned say Amen at thy giving of thanks, seeing he understandeth not what thou sayest?

17 Car en vérité tu remercies bien, mais l’autre n’est pas édifié.

 17 For thou verily givest thanks well, but the other is not edified.

18 Je remercie mon Dieu, je parle plus de langues que vous tous:

 18 I thank my God, I speak with tongues more than ye all:

19 Cependant dans l’église je préférerais dire cinq mots avec ma compréhension, afin que par ma voix je puisse instruire aussi les autres, plutôt que dix mille mots dans une langue inconnue.

 19 Yet in the church I had rather speak five words with my understanding, that by my voice I might teach others also, than ten thousand words in an unknown tongue.

20 Frères, ne soyez pas des enfants dans votre compréhension: seulement en malice soyez des enfants, mais en compréhension, soyez des hommes.

 20 Brethren, be not children in understanding: howbeit in malice be ye children, but in understanding be men.

21 Dans la loi il est écrit, Par des hommes d’autres langues, et d’autres lèvres, je parlerai à ce peuple; et même avec tout cela ils ne m’entendront pas, dit le Seigneur.

 21 In the law it is written, With men of other tongues and other lips will I speak unto this people; and yet for all that will they not hear me, saith the Lord.

22 C’est pourquoi les langues sont pour un signe, non pour ceux qui croient, mais pour ceux qui ne croient pas: mais la prophétie ne sert pas à ceux qui ne croient pas, mais à ceux qui croient.

 22 Wherefore tongues are for a sign, not to them that believe, but to them that believe not: but prophesying serveth not for them that believe not, but for them which believe.

23 Si donc l’église tout entière s’assemble en un même lieu, et que tous parlent des langues, et qu’il entre ceux qui sont sans instruction, ou des non croyants, ne diront-ils pas que vous êtes fous?

 23 If therefore the whole church be come together into one place, and all speak with tongues, and there come in those that are unlearned, or unbelievers, will they not say that ye are mad?

24 Mais si tous prophétisent, et qu’il entre quelqu’un qui ne croit pas, ou un sans instruction, il est convaincu par tous, il est jugé de tous:

 24 But if all prophesy, and there come in one that believeth not, or one unlearned, he is convinced of all, he is judged of all:

25 Et ainsi les secrets de son cœur sont rendus manifestes; et ainsi tombant sur son visage, il adorera Dieu, et déclarera que Dieu est vraiment en vous.

 25 And thus are the secrets of his heart made manifest; and so falling down on his face he will worship God, and report that God is in you of a truth.

26 Comment est-ce donc, frères? lorsque vous vous assemblez, chacun de vous a un psaume, a une doctrine, a une langue, a une révélation, a une interprétation. Que toutes choses soient faites vers l’édification.

 26 How is it then, brethren? when ye come together, every one of you hath a psalm, hath a doctrine, hath a tongue, hath a revelation, hath an interpretation. Let all things be done unto edifying.

27 Si quelqu’un parle dans une langue inconnue, que cela soit fait par deux ou tout au plus trois, et cela l’un après l’autre; et que l’un interprète.

 27 If any man speak in an unknown tongue, let it be by two, or at the most by three, and that by course; and let one interpret.

28 Mais s’il n’y a pas d’interprète, qu’il se taise dans l’église; et qu’il parle à lui-même, et à Dieu.

 28 But if there be no interpreter, let him keep silence in the church; and let him speak to himself, and to God.

29 Que deux ou trois prophètes parlent, et que les autres jugent.

 29 Let the prophets speak two or three, and let the other judge.

30 Si quelque chose est révélée à un autre qui est assis là, que le premier se taise.

 30 If any thing be revealed to another that sitteth by, let the first hold his peace.

31 Car vous pouvez tous prophétiser l’un après l’autre, afin que tous puissent apprendre, et que tous puissent être réconfortés.

 31 For ye may all prophesy one by one, that all may learn, and all may be comforted.

32 Et les esprits des prophètes sont assujettis aux prophètes.

 32 And the spirits of the prophets are subject to the prophets.

33 Car Dieu n’est pas l’auteur de la confusion, mais de la paix, comme dans toutes les églises des saints.

 33 For God is not the author of confusion, but of peace, as in all churches of the saints.

34 Que vos femmes se taisent dans les églises: car il ne leur est pas permis de parler; mais il leur est commandé d’être obéissantes, comme aussi le dit la loi.

 34 Let your women keep silence in the churches: for it is not permitted unto them to speak; but they are commanded to be under obedience, as also saith the law.

35 Et si elles veulent apprendre quelque chose, qu’elles interrogent leurs maris à la maison: car c’est une honte pour les femmes de parler dans l’église.

 35 And if they will learn any thing, let them ask their husbands at home: for it is a shame for women to speak in the church.

36 Quoi? la parole de Dieu est-elle provenue de vous? ou est-elle venue à vous seulement?

 36 What? came the word of God out from you? or came it unto you only?

37 Si quelqu’un pense être un prophète, ou spirituel, qu’il reconnaisse que les choses que je vous écris sont des commandements du Seigneur.

 37 If any man think himself to be a prophet, or spiritual, let him acknowledge that the things that I write unto you are the commandments of the Lord.

38 Mais si quelqu’un est ignorant, laissez-le être ignorant.

 38 But if any man be ignorant, let him be ignorant.

39 C’est pourquoi, frères, désirez ardemment de prophétiser, et n’empêchez pas de parler des langues.

 39 Wherefore, brethren, covet to prophesy, and forbid not to speak with tongues.

40 Que toutes choses se fassent décemment et avec ordre.

 40 Let all things be done decently and in order.
